What is a mom? A tear-wiping, hand-holding, lunch-packing, bedtime-story-telling, love-giving superhero—that’s what! Every year as we enter the month of May, I am reminded of the many blessings—and challenges—of motherhood, and I can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the love and appreciation I have for my own mother, as well as for my friends and family members who are mothers themselves. It is a special job that takes a special person to perform, and I am particularly in awe of just how special the mothers of Enable Alabama have proven to be.
Since launching Enable Alabama, my life has been touched by so many different mothers, bound together by a common thread—each one serving as their child’s number-one advocate, fighting for inclusivity while also ensuring they have access to the funds they need to achieve a better life. From opening an Enable AL account and making contributions, to simply teaching their children about budgeting and encouraging their participation in society, the dedication these women display is unwavering.
Further, I find myself inspired by mothers like Kathleen Baxter, who are on the front lines, speaking out about the importance of financial independence and spreading the word to others who may not be aware that ABLE plans even exist, let alone how to save in one.
To be a mother is to wear a lot of hats—and for the mothers of children with disabilities, the challenges they face are unique. All moms are amazing, but I am truly privileged to work with mothers of Enable Alabama savers daily—they are as fierce, supportive and strong as they come.
This Mother’s Day, take the time to say thank you to a mother. They are the real-life superheroes that make a difference every single day. On behalf of the Enable Savings Plan Alabama family, Happy Mother’s Day.
