The disability community in Alabama is supported by a number of outstanding organizations—groups that are dedicated to fostering an environment of inclusion, while improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families across the state.
This month, we are spotlighting one of the most prominent local disability organizations: The Arc of Alabama. We sat down with Gena Richardson, Executive Director, to learn more about the organization’s goals, advocacy work and educational initiatives.
What is the Arc of Alabama’s mission?
The Arc of Alabama promotes choice and advocates for the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to enjoy full participation in their communities throughout their lifetime.
What are some examples of the ways your organization supports the disability community?
We help coordinate the annual Alabama disABILITY Conference, provide information and referral services, participate in public policy initiatives and assist with the development of our 29 local chapters across Alabama.
How can others get involved in your initiatives?
There are a number of ways to get in touch with us and support our efforts. While monetary and in-kind donations are always helpful to advance our mission, we also offer a car donation program—we accept cars, vans, trucks, boats with trailers, and recreational vehicles. In addition, joining as a member of The Arc helps members of the community get connected and stay abreast of information, advocacy efforts, and public policy initiatives. Our newsletter is distributed electronically, and we encourage people to sign up through our website.
By promoting events, fundraising initiatives, as well as other educational opportunities and activities, The Arc of Alabama demonstrates its commitment to the ultimate goal of serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across their lifespan and ensuring members of local Alabama communities know where to go to discuss their needs and receive support.
Enable Alabama is proud to share this vision with The Arc and to support them in furthering the mission statewide.
